Neocaridina shrimp may be tiny, but figuring out what to feed them can quickly become one of the most confusing parts of shrimp keeping.
Search for the best food for Neocaridina shrimp and you will find dozens of opinions. Some breeders feed every day. Others feed every other day. Some rotate several commercial foods, while others rely heavily on biofilm, leaf litter, vegetables, and naturally occurring microorganisms. Successful breeders can use completely different feeding routines and still raise large, healthy colonies.
That is because there isn't one perfect shrimp food or one correct feeding schedule.
Neocaridina shrimp are opportunistic omnivores and natural grazers. In a healthy aquarium, they spend much of the day picking through biofilm, algae, microorganisms, decaying plant material, and tiny organic particles that we may barely notice.
Supplemental foods are important, especially in larger colonies, but feeding shrimp successfully is less about finding one magical product and more about understanding what your shrimp naturally eat, providing nutritional variety, watching how the colony responds, and avoiding the biggest feeding mistake of all: putting more food into the aquarium than the system can handle.

What Do Neocaridina Shrimp Eat in Nature?
Understanding the natural Neocaridina shrimp diet makes feeding them in an aquarium much easier.
Wild and naturalized Neocaridina commonly inhabit freshwater environments where there are plants, rocks, wood, sediment, leaf litter, algae, and countless submerged surfaces. Instead of waiting for a pellet to fall from the sky once a day, shrimp spend hours continuously picking at these surfaces.

They are opportunistic omnivores, meaning they take advantage of many different edible materials.
Their natural diet can include biofilm, bacteria, algae, periphyton, microorganisms, decaying vegetation, softened leaves, detritus, tiny aquatic organisms, suspended organic particles, decomposing organisms, and other available organic material.
You may also occasionally see shrimp consuming a molted exoskeleton. This is normal. Old molts still contain useful material, and shrimp commonly investigate and consume them.
This grazing behavior is one of the most important things to understand about feeding freshwater shrimp.
A shrimp aquarium is not simply a container holding shrimp that need to be given meals. A mature aquarium is an ecosystem that can continuously produce food.
That is why two tanks containing the same number of shrimp may require very different amounts of supplemental feeding.
A newly established aquarium with clean surfaces and limited biological growth may offer relatively little natural food. A mature planted aquarium filled with moss, wood, established sponge filters, botanicals, algae, and biofilm may provide grazing opportunities almost everywhere the shrimp travel.
The amount of food you add should reflect that difference.
Biofilm: One of the Most Important Neocaridina Foods
If you spend enough time watching Neocaridina shrimp, you will notice that they rarely seem to stop picking at things.
A shrimp may walk across a leaf, driftwood branch, sponge filter, rock, aquarium wall, or patch of moss while rapidly moving its small feeding appendages. It is harvesting microscopic food from the surface.
Much of that food comes from biofilm.

Biofilm is a complex layer of microorganisms and organic material that develops on submerged surfaces. It can include bacteria, microscopic algae, fungi, microorganisms, and trapped organic particles.
To us, a piece of driftwood may simply look slightly seasoned or slimy. To a shrimp, that surface can be a buffet.
Biofilm develops on nearly everything in an established aquarium: plants, driftwood, rocks, sponge filters, substrate, aquarium glass, moss, decorations, botanicals, and even equipment.
A heavily planted mature aquarium can therefore contain an enormous amount of grazing area.
Why Biofilm Is Especially Important for Baby Shrimp
Biofilm becomes even more valuable when shrimplets enter the picture.
Newly hatched Neocaridina are extremely small. Instead of traveling long distances across the aquarium to fight adults for a pellet, babies often spend much of their time grazing close to where they are hiding.
Moss, plants, mature sponge filters, leaf litter, botanicals, wood, and other textured surfaces provide thousands of small areas where shrimplets can search for microscopic food.
This is one reason mature aquariums can be excellent environments for raising baby shrimp.
Powdered foods and finely crushed commercial foods can be useful supplements, but they work best as part of a larger feeding environment rather than as a replacement for an established ecosystem.
How to Encourage Biofilm Naturally
One of the easiest ways to develop more grazing opportunities is simply to give the aquarium time to mature.
Live plants, moss, driftwood, botanicals, leaf litter, sponge filters, and textured hardscape all create additional surfaces for microorganisms to colonize.

This can be particularly useful in tanks with shrimplets, which spend much of their time grazing where they are already hiding and exploring.
We don't view products like BacterAE as a replacement for a mature aquarium, though. Plants, wood, moss, leaf litter, established filtration, and time are still a huge part of building the kind of biologically active environment shrimp thrive in. BacterAE is simply another tool we use to support that environment.
Avoid becoming so aggressive with cleaning that every surface in the aquarium is constantly scrubbed sterile-looking. Basic maintenance and good water quality are important, but a shrimp aquarium does not need to look biologically empty to be healthy.
This does not mean allowing waste to accumulate uncontrollably. The goal is a mature, biologically active aquarium, not a dirty one.
Commercial Neocaridina Shrimp Food
Commercial shrimp foods are one of the easiest ways to provide consistent supplemental nutrition.
Dedicated shrimp-food manufacturers produce formulas designed around different nutritional goals, ingredient profiles, textures, and feeding situations. Depending on the product, you may encounter complete shrimp foods, algae-focused foods, vegetable-based foods, protein-rich formulas, mineral-focused foods, growth foods, baby shrimp powders, pellets, sticks, wafers, and specialty foods.

That does not mean every Shrimp Envy product is the same, that every colony requires every type of food, or that commercial food needs to make up the entire diet.
We prefer variety.
Rotating foods allows you to expose the colony to a broader nutritional profile instead of depending completely on one ingredient list day after day.
One feeding might emphasize plant ingredients. Another may provide more protein. Another could contain mineral-rich ingredients or algae-based nutrition.
Meanwhile, the shrimp continue grazing on whatever the aquarium itself produces.
What Should You Look for in Shrimp Food?
Rather than choosing a food only because the package says "shrimp," look at what is actually in it.
A useful shrimp diet may incorporate plant matter, algae, appropriate protein sources, fiber, vitamins, minerals, calcium-containing ingredients, and other components that contribute to a varied diet.
Protein deserves particular attention because shrimp need it for growth and normal biological processes, but the highest protein percentage is not automatically the best choice for every feeding.
The same applies to calcium and mineral ingredients. They can contribute to good nutrition, but they are not magical solutions for every molting or water-quality problem.
A high-quality commercial Neocaridina shrimp food is convenient and useful. It simply does not have to be the only thing your shrimp ever eat.
What Vegetables Can Neocaridina Shrimp Eat?
Vegetables can be an excellent supplemental food for Neocaridina shrimp.
The key word is supplemental.

Hard vegetables are generally easier for shrimp to eat after they have been blanched, steamed, or otherwise softened. Softer vegetables may need very little preparation.

Keep preparation simple.
For blanching, place the vegetable in hot or boiling water briefly until it softens enough for shrimp to graze, then cool it before adding it to the aquarium.
The exact preparation time depends on the vegetable and thickness of the piece. You are not trying to turn it into mush. You simply want to make hard plant tissue more accessible.
How Much Vegetable Should You Feed?
Start small.
A thin slice or small piece is usually enough to determine whether the colony is interested.
If only a handful of shrimp are grazing on a large chunk of vegetable for hours while the rest of it begins deteriorating, the portion was probably larger than necessary.
Remove food before it begins significantly breaking down and fouling the aquarium.
There is no universal rule that every piece of food must be removed after exactly two hours. Different foods break down at different speeds, and different colonies consume food at dramatically different rates.
The important principle is simpler:
Do not leave large amounts of deteriorating food in the aquarium.
Natural Foods, Leaves, and Botanicals
Natural foods and botanicals can play an important role in a shrimp aquarium because they do more than provide a single meal.
Shrimp-safe leaves and botanical materials gradually soften and decompose while microorganisms and biofilm colonize their surfaces.
Indian almond leaves are probably the most familiar example, but shrimp keepers may also use mulberry leaves, appropriate oak leaves, guava leaves, alder cones, cholla wood, driftwood, and other shrimp-safe botanical materials.
A leaf can remain useful long after it first enters the aquarium.
As the structure softens, shrimp graze on the microorganisms growing across it and eventually consume portions of the leaf itself.

For shrimplets, leaf litter can be especially valuable because it provides both cover and a large network of grazing surfaces.
Botanicals can also give the aquarium a more natural appearance, especially in setups designed around wood, plants, and leaf litter.
The most important consideration is knowing where the material came from.
Never collect random leaves from an area where they may have been exposed to pesticides, herbicides, lawn chemicals, vehicle exhaust, roadside contamination, or other pollutants. Correct identification also matters. Use botanical materials known to be appropriate for aquarium use.
How Much Protein Do Neocaridina Shrimp Need?
Neocaridina need protein.
Protein supports growth, tissue development, reproduction, and other biological processes. That does not mean continuously feeding the highest-protein food available will automatically produce better shrimp.
More protein is not always better.
Shrimp can obtain protein from commercial foods, microorganisms, algae and biofilm communities, appropriate fish or invertebrate foods, specialized protein formulas, and small amounts of animal-derived ingredients found in many prepared foods.
The amount and frequency you choose may depend partly on your goals.
A lightly stocked display colony may not require the same feeding intensity as a large breeding colony producing generations of juveniles.
A breeder trying to support growing juveniles and condition adults may include protein-rich foods more frequently as one part of a varied rotation.
The important distinction is between providing enough protein and dumping excessive amounts of protein-rich food into the aquarium.
Uneaten protein-rich foods still become organic waste.

Molting is one of the most important biological processes in a shrimp's life.
Because shrimp grow within a rigid exoskeleton, they periodically shed the old shell and form a new one. Proper nutrition and appropriate mineral availability contribute to this process.
Calcium and magnesium are commonly discussed in shrimp keeping because minerals are involved in exoskeleton development and normal growth.
However, there is an important distinction that sometimes gets lost when discussing "molting foods."
Food Does Not Replace Proper Water Chemistry
Shrimp obtain nutrients and minerals through both their diet and their environment.
A mineral-rich food may be a useful part of a feeding routine, but feeding a calcium-focused product does not automatically correct unsuitable water parameters.
General hardness, carbonate hardness, dissolved minerals, temperature, stability, and other aspects of water chemistry still matter.
If shrimp are repeatedly having molting problems, the solution should not automatically be "feed more calcium."
Look at the entire system.

Be skeptical of claims that one food can simply "prevent failed molts." Shrimp health is more complicated than that.
What Should You Feed Baby Neocaridina Shrimp?
Baby Neocaridina, commonly called shrimplets, generally do not need giant chunks of food.
What they need most is access.

A baby shrimp cannot always travel across the aquarium as efficiently as an adult can, particularly when fish or large numbers of adult shrimp are competing for a concentrated food source.
This is why mature biofilm is so valuable.
Moss, sponge filters, plants, wood, botanicals, leaf litter, substrate, and other established surfaces create food throughout the aquarium.
Powdered baby shrimp foods can also be useful because tiny particles spread across a larger area instead of remaining concentrated in one pellet.
Finely crushed commercial foods can accomplish something similar.
The important part is restraint.
Powdered foods are easy to overfeed because you cannot always see exactly how much remains uneaten.
Several very small supplemental feedings may work better in a shrimplet-focused aquarium than dropping in a large amount at once.
A well-established aquarium containing abundant natural grazing surfaces can make raising large numbers of baby shrimp considerably easier.
How Often Should You Feed Neocaridina Shrimp?
This is where shrimp keepers often want a precise answer.
Should you feed every day?
Every other day?
Three times per week?
Twice per day?
The answer is that all of those schedules can work under the right circumstances.
How often to feed Neocaridina shrimp depends on the aquarium.
Colony size matters. Tank maturity matters. Shrimplet numbers matter. The amount of biofilm and algae matters. Fish competition matters. Food type matters. Temperature, plant density, maintenance practices, and water quality can all influence how much supplemental nutrition makes sense.
A colony of 20 shrimp in a heavily planted, mature aquarium may require surprisingly little additional food.
Several hundred shrimp reproducing rapidly in another aquarium may consume supplemental foods much more aggressively.
Instead of asking, "How often does the internet say shrimp should eat?" ask:
How much supplemental food does this particular colony actually need?
Some shrimp keepers successfully offer a small amount every day. Others feed every other day. Breeders managing large colonies may provide several small feedings. Heavily mature aquariums may receive only occasional supplemental food.
Many different routines work.
How Much Should You Feed Shrimp?
There is no reliable "one pellet per X shrimp" formula that applies to every aquarium.
Commercial foods vary dramatically in size, density, ingredients, and how quickly they break apart. Shrimp colonies differ in size and age structure. Tanks differ in how much natural food they produce.
Start with less than you think you need and observe.
A good feeding routine is responsive.
If food sits mostly untouched for long periods, reduce the amount or frequency.
If a large colony consistently consumes reasonable portions without excess waste and water quality remains excellent, your routine may be working well.
As the colony grows, feeding may need to increase.
When population drops or a tank becomes more mature, supplemental feeding may need to decrease.
Your shrimp will not read the feeding instructions on the internet. Watch the aquarium in front of you.
Signs You May Be Feeding Too Much
Overfeeding is usually more dangerous than slightly underestimating how much supplemental food a mature shrimp colony needs.
The shrimp themselves may continue picking at food whenever it is available, but the aquarium still has to process everything they do not consume.
Repeatedly adding too much food can leave uneaten material throughout the tank, increase organic waste, foul the substrate, reduce water clarity, fuel bacterial blooms, encourage algae, and contribute to unwanted pest populations.

In severe situations, deteriorating food and excess waste can contribute to dangerous water-quality problems, including ammonia or nitrite concerns.
Overfed aquariums also tend to require more maintenance.
This is why "feed more" should not be the automatic response whenever shrimp swarm a pellet.
Neocaridina are opportunistic feeders. They often investigate food enthusiastically even when they have spent the previous several hours grazing on natural food.
Signs You May Be Feeding Too Little
Underfeeding supplemental food can happen, particularly in large breeding colonies or newer aquariums with limited natural grazing surfaces.
Possible warning signs may include poor juvenile growth, declining reproduction, shrimp appearing thin or unhealthy, limited activity associated with broader husbandry problems, or shrimplets having very little available grazing area.
Extremely sparse tanks with few plants, no established sponge filter, little algae, and limited biofilm deserve particular attention.
Shrimp aggressively piling onto every food offering can sometimes suggest that more food may be appropriate, but do not treat this behavior as proof of starvation.
Healthy shrimp naturally swarm attractive foods.
Consider the full picture: colony size, growth, reproduction, body condition, natural grazing opportunities, and water quality.

Lightly Stocked Mature Aquarium
A mature, planted aquarium containing a relatively small number of shrimp may need minimal supplemental feeding.
You might offer commercial shrimp food occasionally, rotate in a vegetable or natural food, and allow the shrimp to obtain much of their daily intake through natural grazing.
If food regularly remains untouched, there is probably no benefit to increasing feeding simply because a schedule says you should.
Typical Breeding Colony
A breeding colony may benefit from regular supplemental food combined with abundant natural grazing surfaces.
You might rotate complete commercial foods, plant-based formulas, occasional protein-rich foods, vegetables, and botanicals while allowing biofilm and leaf litter to provide continuous grazing.

Large Breeding Colony
Large colonies usually have greater overall demand.
More frequent feeding can work well, but portion control becomes increasingly important because more food also means more potential waste.
Large breeders often learn to judge portions by watching how quickly different foods disappear and adjusting feeding as population changes.
Shrimplet-Focused Aquarium
A tank filled with babies may emphasize mature biofilm, moss, established sponge filters, plants, leaf litter, and botanicals.

Frequent small additions are usually easier to control than repeatedly adding large quantities of powdered food.
What Can Cherry Shrimp Eat?
Cherry shrimp are Neocaridina, so their feeding requirements follow the same general principles discussed throughout this guide.
They can eat high-quality commercial shrimp foods, algae, biofilm, microorganisms, appropriate vegetables, shrimp-safe leaves and botanicals, and a wide variety of suitable natural foods.
Different color varieties of Neocaridina do not suddenly require completely different diets.
Whether you keep red cherry shrimp, blue dream shrimp, orange shrimp, yellow shrimp, or another Neocaridina variety, focus on variety, appropriate nutrition, grazing opportunities, and water quality.
What Foods Should You Avoid Feeding Shrimp?
Just because shrimp are opportunistic scavengers does not mean every edible-looking object belongs in the aquarium.
Appropriate shrimp foods include commercial shrimp formulas, properly prepared shrimp-safe vegetables, algae, biofilm, botanicals, leaf litter, and other foods known to be suitable for freshwater invertebrates.
Some vegetables and botanicals require preparation first. Hard vegetables may need blanching or steaming. Natural leaves should be correctly identified, appropriately dried or prepared when necessary, and sourced from contaminant-free locations.
Foods intended for people require far more caution.
Avoid randomly adding foods containing salt, butter, oils, sauces, spices, seasonings, excessive sugar, artificial flavoring, inappropriate preservatives, pesticide residue, or chemicals that are not safe for aquariums.
A shrimp may attempt to eat something simply because it contains organic material.
That does not make it a good shrimp food.
Feeding Shrimp in an Aquarium With Fish
Community aquariums introduce an additional problem: competition.
Fish are often dramatically faster than shrimp at detecting and reaching food.
If every pellet disappears into a school of fish before reaching the substrate, shrimp may receive less supplemental nutrition than you intended.
Sinking foods can help.
You can also feed shrimp shortly after the fish have eaten, place food directly near shrimp hiding areas, use small pieces in different parts of the aquarium, or feed after the aquarium lights have gone out if that fits the behavior of the species involved.
Dense plants, moss, hardscape, and other protected areas also give shrimp more opportunities to graze without constantly competing with fish.
A feeding dish can be useful in some community setups, although it is not required.

Remember that keeping shrimp with fish involves more than feeding. Many fish will also eat baby shrimp when given the opportunity, so dense cover becomes particularly valuable in breeding colonies.
Should You Use a Shrimp Feeding Dish?
Shrimp feeding dishes are convenient, but optional.
A small glass or ceramic dish allows you to place food in one predictable location. This can make it easier to watch how quickly the colony eats, remove leftovers, and prevent certain foods from disappearing deep into the substrate.
It can also make feeding time a great opportunity to inspect the colony.
You may spot berried females, juveniles, unusual behavior, injuries, or other changes while dozens of shrimp gather in one place.
The disadvantage is that concentrated feeding does not necessarily distribute food evenly, particularly for tiny shrimplets.
A dish also does not replace natural grazing surfaces.

"Shrimp need specialized shrimp food to survive."
